A 68-year-old Lower Merion man fell approximately 45 feet into the trash transfer pit at the Lower Merion Public Works Koegal Complex Saturday. Residents were able to bring household trash and recycling to the center at 1300 N. Woodbine Ave., Penn Valley as part of the township’s Fall Clean Up this weekend.

At 12:54 p.m., according to information from Lower Merion Township, the man who resides on the 100 block of Maple Avenue in Bala Cynwyd, fell into the refuse pit while unloading rubbish from a U-Haul truck. .

Rescue crews from Belmont Hills and Penn Wynne Fire Cos. were assisted by the Montgomery County technical team including Morristown and King of Prussia Fire Companies. Rescue crews extended a ladder over the pit while crews stretched ropes. Working with Narberth EMS and PennStar paramedics, crews raised the victim from the trash pile up to the ground level.

The victim was then taken by Narberth Ambulance to the Lankenau Hospital Trauma Center for medical care. At approximately 2:30 p.m., the man succumbed to his injuries. Immediate family members were notified.

The Fall Clean-up Event was cancelled for the rest of the day Saturday after the accident. The event will re-open Sunday at 8 a.m.
