Saturday morning, as snow fell across the region in single digit temperatures, stations 22 and 24 were dispatched to the Schuylkill Expressway for reports of multiple accidents and multiple injuries. Rescue 22 made the response and found accidents stretching both directions of 76 culminating with an enormous 30 car pile up in the west bound lanes that was impassable. Crews from both Belmont Hills and Gladwyne shut down the east bound lanes and assisted Narberth EMS with patient triage, care and packaging and to organize the EMS response. 12 people were eventually transported to area hospitals with a range of injuries. Fire crews checked for road hazards, fluids and helped to secure vehicles. They also helped the state troopers and all the tow truck drivers clean up the accident scene. Multiple assets were brought in from the county and the city of Philadelphia to help keep commuters warm as they waited for the road to re-open. After 3 very long, cold and snowy hours, the scene was cleared and the roadway reopened.
